Piano Tuning
We provide tuning by ear! There are many factors of which all tuners are aware of that the electronic device is just simply incapable of doing (unison tuning, setting a tuning pin correctly, etcetera…) Although there are very competent and effective electronic device tuners out there, we believe that it is less effective to go ‘by the numbers’ even early on with the tuning, and attention to the feel of the tuning pin (and string) movement are of great importance. Proper setting of the pin and string will lengthen the time needed between tunings. How long a tuning lasts is just as important to how it sounds (there are other factors regarding tuning longevity, of course, but the focus here is just on tuning methods). Also, unless all the pianos we service are exactly the same, fundamental partials behave differently between pianos that lead to ‘inharmonicity’. The best tuners effectiveness will rest in large part on their dealing with inharmonicity (and, admittedly, their understanding of the ‘numbers’). Again, my valued colleagues range from strictly electronic tuners, hybrid aural/device tuners, and fully aural tuners. Regardless of that, the ear must be the final judge and not the numbers!
